Codetta: Supporting Child-Composers’ Creativity

As developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are rapidly accelerating, more and more generative models are emerging that are capable of creating music based on a surrounding context, for example, by in-filling blank bars of music. There is the potential to use this technology to facilitate children’s creative experience in digital music composition. However, there has been little work examining how the creative experience is affected when users co-create with generative AI – particularly, in an educational context. This project explores how children’s creative experiences can be supported by integrating generative AI into Codetta: a block-based digital musical interface. Early work examined interaction logs collected from 20 children (aged 6-11) composing with Codetta, to find correlations between children’s interactions and expert musician’s socially validated scores. We found that note-level interactions best-supported children’s ability to be creative in music composition and recommend that the transition between low-level edits and high-level processes is carefully scaffolded.
